Meet Mrs. HenningDear Incoming 9th Grade ELA Student:
I fell in love with English my junior year of high school. Up until that point, I really didn't have much passion for English class because my teachers relied heavily on packets and "correct answers." I was planning on becoming a science teacher or genetics researcher, but my junior English teacher changed everything for me. I discovered that within the English classroom, we can explore a diverse range of topics, opinions, arguments, and research, and that as long as you can logically and persuasively defend your answer, it's fair game! At that moment, I decided I wanted to be just like that English teacher and open up these experiences to students earlier in their English experience. I am thrilled to be back at WMAA for another year. It is my home away from home and the place where I feel most celebrated for being my nerdy and passionate self. I hope you find the same experience, because WMAA has become that for so many people- students and staff alike. Earlier in my career, I taught in 4 different states in every grade from 8th-A.P. Literature. I grew up in Stevensville, a small town in southwest Michigan, and we are excited to be back in Michigan, putting down our roots in Grand Rapids for a long time to come. My teaching style and philosophy all stem from my junior year high school teacher: my favorite part of the English classroom is giving students the opportunity to explore their unique passions through reading, writing, research, and discussion in order to build a community of explorers, deep thinkers, and kind human beings. The more we can make this class about YOU and the aspects of our curriculum that spark energy in you, the more engaging our year will become! Outside of school, I spend most of my time with Ben, my 2 year old son, walking to get muffins at the Jam'n Bean and watching trucks go by. He loves pick-up trucks and garbage trucks! I love food, reading, coordinating get togethers with friends and family, movies, and learning about someone else's completely different worldview. I also co-lead the best club on campus- Foodie Club! Join us sometime to explore Grand Rapids food scene and share a meal! I hope this letter gives you some insight into who I am as a teacher and makes you excited for our yearlong journey together! I am looking forward to a dynamic and wonderful year together!
