Welcome to the Sea of Stories
As an introduction to our year of studying literature of the English language (commonly referred to as a "British Literature" course), we will begin with the questions "What is British literature?" "Why does it matter?" and "What use are stories that aren't even true in our everyday lives?" While we will soon travel back to the past, to the earliest traces of the English language, but our year begins with a more contemporary work: Haroun and the Sea of Stories. By starting in the present day, we can more readily identify the components of storytelling and the English language that have woven their way from 1,400 years ago into our present-day cultural identity.
